HNTB, one of the largest and most respected design firms in the transportation industry, is seeking an experienced Project Engineer - Overhead Contact Systems (OCS) in our San Francisco, CA or San Jose, CA offices who will prepare designs for OCS system improvements for various projects from feasibility through final design.

Job Summary

Provides coordination of project execution and control, in a given discipline area, to achieve continuity of purpose within scope, budget, and time schedules from initial start-up through project closeout. Also accountable for handling specific design aspects on projects appropriate to discipline field. Coordinate efforts of assigned design team to ensure completeness and accuracy of design effort. Serve as technical liaison with client on project efforts. Responsible for gross revenue of <$1M.

Essential Responsibility

  • Responsible for the delivery of project discipline scope elements within budget and schedule.

  • Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work. Guides team to overall project objectives.

  • Serves as technical liaison with client at staff level for work within the discipline.

  • Assists with project management duties.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Analytical expertise in the structural support of OCS for heavy rail, commuter, light, or streetcar systems including:

  • Preparation of OCS structure and wiring layouts plans

  • Prepare assembly and component drawings

  • Ability to design on screen in production of CAD drawings

  • Support and direct the catenary engineering and design/drafting staff

  • Experience in development of OCS construction specifications

  • OCS construction cost estimating

  • Analytical knowledge of OCS profile design and calculations

  • Perform structural design calculations

  • Understanding of OCS construction phasing and staging.

  • Structural steel analysis and design capability

  • Reinforced concrete foundation design experience

  • Experience with OCS field construction and techniques

  • Experience with relevant code requirements for overhead contact system design

  • Knowledge of industry standards associated with railway design and operation

  • Knowledge of the interface with and characteristics of Traction Power Systems

  • Cooperate with adjacent system-related disciplines such as traction power, track, signals and communications.

  • May occasionally supervise and schedule work for other team members

  • Work in collaboration with other offices within the company.

  • Participate in project working meetings.

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Engineering

6 years relevant experience

PE or AICP (depending on discipline)

Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Bachelor ‘s Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with master’s degree preferred

  • EIT certification

  • 6 years of experience in design of overhead contact systems

  • Consulting design experience preparing contractor packages for construction


General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
